Author Commentary: I am a Survivor
I was inspired to write “I am a Survivor” after reading a book called “Lone Survivor” by Marcus Luttrell. Marcus is the lone survivor of Seal Team 10 that was ambushed in Afghanistan. His story is incredible and a must read.
A majority of the book is actually dedicated to describing Navy SEAL Training, ever heard of “Hell Week”? Marcus knew he survived “Hell Week”, so he could survive anything. Those thoughts of resiliency kept him going through the most horrid conditions. A resilient mind can make the body go through so much pain.
One of my patients is a SEAL (or frogman if you prefer). His back is a mess, but even worse, his spirit was broken. His light was out. I told him to read “Lone Survivor”. At his next appointment, the spark was back in his eyes. He said, “Thanks Doc, I needed that”. He had read the book and reached deep to find the SEAL in him.
Everyone has a little SEAL deep down inside. You just have to think about your Hell day or week. Tell yourself, “if I can get through that I can get through anything”. Hooyah!
